Natural and archaeological monument, known for rare species of flora and fauna, as well as a collection of rock paintings - the Sarmyshsay gorge.

Sarmyshsay is located on the southern slope of the Nurata Range, 40 km northeast of Navoi. Scientists and archaeologists have discovered more than 200 archaeological sites during research. Had been discovered  burial mounds, the remains of ancient settlements and workshops for processing silicon, but the most interesting were rock paintings - ancient galleries of petroglyphs.

  • The size of the territory of Sarmyshsay is about 20 square kilometers
  • Over 10,000 petroglyphs had been discovered on the area of the gorge 
  • Sarmyshsay earliest petroglyphs date from about 9000 BC
  • The most recent include texts written in Arabic script and telling about the life of dervishes
  • The image of the bull is the most ancient, particular for the Upper Paleolithic
  • There are also images of people and animals, scenes of hunting and everyday life
