Naryn

Naryn

Naryn is a “delicious” city.

From where the name of the city of Naryn originated is still unknown. There are a number of assumptions regarding this issue. One of the versions is connected with the fact that in the distant past, the city was under the rule of the Dzungarian Khanate, and in Kalmyk the name of the city sounds like “Nairn”, which is consonant with “Naryn”. The word "Nairn" is translated as "narrow". That is the name of the narrow river that flows through Naryn, so it is quite possible that the city was named after it.

According to another version, the name of the city Naryn is directly related to the national dish of Central Asia, which is prepared from horsemeat. There is an opinion that local chefs cooked it better than in other districts and in connection with this, the city Naryn received a “delicious” name.

The history of the city Naryn, like many other cities of Central Asia, began with the establishment of a military fortification on this territory to protect the trade routes from the robbers who came to Central Asia from Kashgaria (East Turkestan). Until the mid-18th century, the city itself was not here. Only in 1868 after the accession of Central Asia to the Russian Empire, the Naryn fortification was erected here and the Russian garrison was located, and later the full-scale construction of the city of Naryn began.

During the Russian revolution, in 1920, a battle took place between the Red Army and the White Guard troops on the territory of Naryn. This event caused a huge number of victims. In the center of the city Naryn, a memorial is erected as a tribute to the memory of those killed in the fighting.

Since 1927, the city of Naryn is the regional center of Kyrgyzstan. Today Naryn is a modern, industrial city, with a developed infrastructure, to which there is a great interest from tourists. First of all, Naryn attracts with its stunning nature. About 70% of the territory is occupied by mountains, therefore, unique scenic landscapes open up from any point: “mirror” lakes, turbulent rivers, waterfalls, a large amount of greenery, mountain gorges and passes.

By the way, the Nairn River, which was mentioned earlier, is one of the main attractions of the city Naryn. The interest of tourists to this river is explained by its impermanence: on the plains the flow is calm and moderate, and in the mountains the river seems to be subjected to external forces, begins to go crazy and brawl - rushing forward rapidly, tearing everything in its path, beating on the mountain gorge and stunned roars. Often you can see extreme people who are engaged in rafting on the Nairn River.

Speaking about architectural landmarks and cultural and educational institutions, the most interesting for tourists can be: the Naryn Museum of Local Lore, the Musical Drama Theater, and the Manas Ruhu National Theater.
